Candidate Screening Methodology
The art of screening is one of the most intensive processes
Herrerias & Associates undertakes when seeking your winning candidate.
In short, screening eliminates unqualified candidates from contention for
your role. While this sounds simple, an established methodology ensures
this process is performed accurately and efficiently, using such tools as
phone interviews, written surveys, personal interviews, and in some cases
"homework assignments."
Phone Interviews:
Each telephone
contact with a candidate has a specific purpose. Herrerias & Associates
professionals will design a document with distinct screening criteria to
direct the recruiter through a series of questions developed with your
particular needs in mind. The documentation created and compiled in this
process is used to determine the best candidate.
Written Surveys:
A written
candidate survey evolves from the search criteria our professionals develop
with your firm. The survey instrument is based on Herrerias &
Associates' proprietary leadership consulting technology. Candidates who
qualify to take the survey can detail past accomplishments, highlight their
motivations for pursuing a given position, and explain how they will serve
your needs if selected.
Personal interviews:
The high-touch
personal interview is still a mainstay of our retained search process. The
time a recruiter takes to meet your winning candidate face-to-fact is time
well invested. We look for communication skills, confidence, integrity,
commitment and depth of competence in specific skill sets. Face time allows
us to build rapport, reflecting a measure of exclusivity with your search.
Most of all, it prepares us for closing the search with a candidate when
appropriate.
Homework assignments:
In some
circumstances, the best way to determine if a candidate "has the right
stuff" is to have them complete an assignment. Maybe your role has a
high technical component or you need a way to differentiate between two or
more closely matched candidates. In these cases we will design an
assignment to fit your needs.

Third-party
confirmation is a powerful way to predict a candidate's behavior once they
become part of your leadership team. Herrerias & Associates is
disciplined to ask questions that pertain to your specific search
assignment. We have developed questions from our work coaching
high-performance teams and consulting on leadership issues.
Couple these tools with each recruiter's honed abilities
to focus on your needs, and you are the beneficiary of a powerful screening
engine. Herrerias & Associates considers efficient, effective screening
a vital part of the overall search process in which you are investing.
